Job Summary/Description:

WCTV is searching for our next Capital City Correspondent to lead coverage of vital city and county government issues for Tallahassee and Leon County. Florida's capital city has so much to offer, including a chance to tell meaningful and impactful stories through the lens of local politics. With a governor now running for president, a historic 2023 legislative session continuing to draw national attention, and a 2024 session on the horizon, there couldn't be a better time to join our team. This role is perfect for someone who works best with beat-based assignments, and a champion for community-focused and solutions journalism. If combing through agendas and public records, and finding "real people" stories beyond government excites you, this could be a perfect fit.

Duties/Responsibilities will include (but be limited to):

– Generating story ideas and building local contacts, with a focus on city and county government leaders, community advocates, experts at our local universities, and "real people" impacted by our stories
– Monitoring public meetings including city commission, county commission and school board
– Maintaining and organizing spreadsheets to keep track of meetings and follow-up story opportunities
– Earning the respect of sources and peers through professional, informative, and balanced storytelling
– Committing to a high level of integrity and fair reporting on complex and multi-faceted issues
– Shooting, writing, and editing daily content for multiple newscasts and our website WCTV.TV
– Compelling live reporting, including breaking news, elections, severe weather, and features
– Ability to shift into breaking news, severe weather, and feature reporting as assigned
– Operating portable live unit, and conducting live shots from the field
– Completing other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

– 1+ years as an MMJ in a television newsroom
– Experience accessing, analyzing, and simplifying public records
– BS/BA in journalism or communications
– A valid driver's license and good driving record
